I have resided in the Midwest, the South, the Southwest, and the West, but the majority of my life has been spent living in the Northeast. My home and studio are located in Columbia County, New York, near the borders of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Several of the paintings on this page are from this area, while much of my earlier work reflects over 25 years in Western Massachusetts near Springfield.

I have great affection for the Southern United States, southern people, and southern culture. My time living in Ormond Beach, Florida in 1974 produced the Grapefruit Truck painting and Miller’s Dog House, Daytona Beach. Painted in the 1970’s, these two early works were pivotal in establishing my style.
Blues, country music, and jazz have always been an important part of my life. I played harmonica and sang in blues and rock bands for many years, so it was only natural that a road trip pilgrimage through Mississippi via Highway 61 from Memphis to New Orleans would inspire me to paint the other eight pieces in this group, which I refer to as my Delta Series.

I was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, however my family moved to New Mexico when I was 3 years old. I have no memory of my birthplace. My Midwest memories were made later. I attended Minneapolis College of Art & Design in 1973 and ‘74. Porky’s, which was in Saint Paul until it closed in 2012, is my tribute to the Twin Cities.
In the early 1990’s I was a sales rep for an art materials company. My territory was Michigan and Ohio, but my favorite part of the job was my visits to the home offices near Chicago. Hot Diggity Dogs is my homage to the great city of Chicago, IL, where I could be found in the blues clubs after hours.

Motel, Air Conditioned, TV, Swimming Pool: These words, lit up in glowing neon, welcomed a generation of Americans to a good night’s rest just off the two-lane highway. I was one of those kids happy to tumble out of the station wagon and into the pool. In 1956 my family moved from Cedar Rapids, IA to Albuquerque, NM. This was where I became aware of the world and my first memories were created.
Route 66, Central Avenue in Albuquerque, was the gateway to the city. At night it was a kaleidoscope of neon motel signs welcoming motorists with a riot of animated color and light. Evocative names like The Tewa Lodge, The El Don, The Aztec Motel and The Desert Sands Motel beckoned weary travelers on a western adventure. In the 1950’s heyday of these places I was a wide-eyed kid with an imagination fueled by John Wayne westerns and curio shop rubber tomahawks.
In 1962 we moved to Roswell, NM. I loved Roswell, but our stay there was to be just a brief few years: 1962 - 1965
By the time I was twelve I had attended four different elementary schools, motored coast to coast, seen a big swath of America via two lane highways and stayed in lots of motels. For over twenty years of my adult life I had jobs that involved extensive travel. I’ve slept in motel or hotel rooms in most of the lower 48 states.
As the corporate homogenization of our commercial landscape continues relentlessly, vernacular roadside oases are fast becoming an endangered species. These paintings help to preserve an important part of our American cultural history.

I love the West. I lived in Walnut Creek, California for a few years in my early childhood. It’s where I got my first bicycle for my seventh birthday. The paintings on this page come from business trips to Los Angeles and San Francisco while I was employed in the fine art paper industry.
